In a nutshell, Spiritually Oriented Therapy is the combination of traditional therapy and spirituality. In this therapeutic technique, the therapist helps the client utilize their spiritual beliefs and practices to overcome challenges that are being experienced. Spiritually oriented therapy has been used to help clients cope with grief and loss, life transitions, relationship struggles, and self-confidence. Session activities may include, but are not limited to, reflective listening, meditation, guided visualization, and inspirational literature.
Summermatter and Keya (2017) state some reasons why spirituality may be included in a therapy session:
- If a client has strong spiritual beliefs, they cannot leave it out of the therapy session
- Psychological problems can cause spiritual problems and vice versa
- Spirituality can be a good resource for solving problems
- Techniques are enriched by focusing any therapeutic method on a dimension of spirituality
- Psychological and spiritual change take place together even when sacredness is not a direct focal point
